What the AI checks on Sports cards cards

What matters on sports cards: Prizm shimmer, Chrome refractors, vintage Topps stock and jersey patches.

  1. Centering L/R · T/B

Front and back ratios (55/45 for a 10). Off-centre past 65/35 caps the card at a 9 before anyone looks at the corners.

  2. Corners 8 tips

Sharpness, whitening, dings. One soft tip is usually the whole difference between a 9 and a 10.

  3. Edges 8 edges

Edge wear, chipping, roughness. Chipping hides in the border. It is the most common reason a clean card comes back a 9.

  4. Surface 2 faces

Chrome scratches, print lines, defects. Print lines and holo scratches are invisible in a phone photo and fatal to gem mint.

Centering on sports cards

Measures the exact pixel distance between borders: a 10 needs 55/45 or better on the front and 75/25 on the back. Off-centre printing is common on some Panini products, so check this first.

Chrome and Prizm surface

Finds micro-scratches, shimmer defects and print lines on Chrome, Prizm, Select and refractor surfaces that are easy to miss by eye.

Edge and corner analysis

Detects corner whitening, soft corners and edge chipping, and flags the minor imperfections that cost high-value rookies a top score.

How accurate is the AI for sports cards?

Our AI checks the same observable criteria professional graders look at. It analyzes centering, corners, edges and surface on sports cards. The TCGAI Score is an AI estimate, not an official grade. Third-party grades may differ. We are not affiliated with any third-party grading company.

Does it work on all sports: NBA, NFL, MLB and soccer?

Yes. It works on all major sports cards: basketball (Prizm, Hoops), football (Select, Mosaic), baseball (Topps Chrome, Bowman), soccer (Topps UCL) and hockey (Upper Deck), on the same four sub-grades.

Can it detect Chrome surface scratches?

Yes. The surface engine targets Chrome and refractor surfaces: micro-scratches, print lines and shimmer defects, which are easy to miss by eye. Fine scratches can still hide in a single photo, so light the card evenly.

Should I send my rookie card for grading if the TCGAI Score is 9?

It depends on the player. A 9 on a Wemby Prizm Silver can still be valuable. Use the market estimate to compare a 9 with a top grade for your specific card.
