Market outlook
Stable Outlook 8/10
Consistent demand for Bench rookies anchored by HOF status, but abundant mid-grade supply caps upside; high grades show appreciation.
Next months. Stable with slight upward pressure on grades graded 7+ due to collector interest.
Long term. Rising for high grades as supply ages and Bench's legacy endures.
History
Johnny Bench, Hall of Famer and considered one of the greatest catchers in MLB history, debuted with the Cincinnati Reds in 1967. His 1968 Topps #247 Reds Rookies card shares the spotlight with Ron Tompkins, marking Bench's official rookie card. Bench led the Reds' 'Big Red Machine' to back-to-back World Series titles (1975-1976), won 2 NL MVPs (1970, 1972), 10 Gold Gloves, and hit .267 with 389 HR and 1,376 RBI over 17 seasons, amassing 75.1 WAR—the highest for any catcher.
First released in 1968 as part of the Topps Baseball Series 3 pack, distributed primarily in the United States.
- Johnny Bench won NL Rookie of the Year in 1968 with a .275 average, 15 HR, and .991 fielding percentage.
- The card is horizontal format, a rarity in the 1968 Topps set.
- graded has graded 12,941 copies, with only 17 graded 10s known.

Collector notes
Condition. Check for centering issues (common off-center due to horizontal design), corner wear, edge chipping, print defects on faces/names, and surface scratches; 1968 Topps cards often have wax stains and print lines.
Storage. Store in semi-rigid holders or top-loaders with UV-protective sleeves in cool, dry conditions away from light; avoid stacking without dividers.
Authenticity. No official reprints exist; verify via graded/graded population reports, check Topps copyright alignment and font consistency; fakes rare but watch for overly sharp corners on low-grade claims or chemical whitening.
