Vintage Pokémon cards, especially iconic holos from the Gym Challenge era, continue to see increased demand as collectors seek nostalgic pieces. The card's association with the Giovanni Theme Deck and its rarity in high grades support upward momentum.
Next months. Prices expected to rise 5–10% over the next 3–6 months due to holiday demand and collector auctions.
Long term. 1–3 year outlook is positive with potential 15–25% appreciation, driven by sustained vintage market growth and increasing recognition of Gym Challenge-era cards.
History
Giovanni is the leader of the criminal organization Team Rocket in the Pokémon universe, best known as a Fighting-type trainer and the boss who appears in the Pokémon games as the final boss of the first Pokémon Gym in Viridian City. He is also the primary character of the Giovanni Theme Deck from Gym Challenge, which focuses on Fighting-type Pokémon such as Hitmonchan and Hitmonko.
- The card is a Trainer card (despite the 'POKEMON' type label in some databases), allowing players to evolve a Pokémon with 'Giovanni' in its name, even if it was recently played or evolved.
- Giovanni is the only Pokémon TCG character with a dedicated Theme Deck in the Gym Challenge set, emphasizing Final Boss and Fighting-type synergy.
- The card is numbered 18/132 and is a Rare Holo, making it one of the signature holos of the base Gym Challenge set.

Collector notes
Condition. Key flaws to check include centering, hinge wear (if ungraded), and creases. The holographic foil is prone to micro-scratches and edge wear. Common issues include whitening on corners, slight bending, and foil fading. Look for tape marks or print defects on the front.
Storage. Store in a hard plastic sleeve or top loader, then place in a sealed airtight bag with a silica gel pack. Keep in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight. For long-term storage, use a fireproof card box.
Authenticity. Fakes often have incorrect foil patterns, blurry text, or off-center printing. The holographic layer on authentic cards is uniform and has a distinct shimmer. Check the copyright line (Wizards of the Coast, 2000) and the card number alignment. Reprints may lack the original foil texture or have slightly different color saturation.
