History
José Fernández was a Cuban professional baseball pitcher for the Miami Marlins, renowned for his electric fastball, devastating curveball, and charismatic personality. Defecting from Cuba at age 15, he became a two-time All-Star, 2013 NL Rookie of the Year, and led the Marlins in strikeouts multiple times before his tragic death in a boating accident on September 25, 2016, at age 24, cementing his status as a rising superstar cut short.
2016 Topps Strata Clearly Authentic Relics Green set, released in late 2016 shortly after Fernández's death, making it a poignant memorial card featuring authentic game-used memorabilia.
- Fernández's card was rushed into production post his passing, increasing its emotional and collectible appeal
- The 'Clearly Authentic' series uses clear acetate material embedding relics for visual impact
- His #16 jersey number and Marlins tenure are iconic in modern baseball card collecting

Collector notes
Condition. Inspect relic embedding for centering and clarity through acetate; check for chipping on clear edges, surface scratches, print defects on stamp, and relic authenticity; common flaws include edge wear from relic pressure and acetate clouding.
Storage. Store in relic-safe top-loader with soft sleeve in humidity-controlled environment (40-50% RH); avoid direct light to prevent acetate yellowing; use semi-rigid holders for relic protection.
Authenticity. Verify Topps hologram and serial numbering if present; genuine relics show natural fabric texture and provenance via Beckett or graded authentication; fakes often have blurry stamps, synthetic-feel relics, or mismatched green acetate tint.
